Also, six members of the council have been reappointed for a three-year term from July 15, said the President’s Office in a statement.

Mr Sa’at is the president of the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore, or Muis, and has held several leadership positions in the media sector. He is also a senior consultant for special projects at Berita Harian.

The council, created in 1970, ensures that laws passed in Parliament do not discriminate against any racial or religious community.

The council also sometimes advises the president on the nominations of people to the Presidential Council for Religious Harmony, and to the Malay Community Committee and the Indian and Other Minority Communities Committee for parliamentary elections.

With Mr Sa’at’s appointment to the council, there are a total of 18 members, comprising the chairman, five permanent members and 12 other members.

Chief Justice Sundaresh Menon is chairman, while the permanent members are Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, Minister for Home Affairs and Law K. Shanmugam, former Cabinet minister S. Dhanabalan and former Speaker Abdullah Tarmugi.

The 12 other members of the council include Attorney-General Lucien Wong, former Sikh Advisory Board chairman Surjit Singh and Cardinal William Goh, who is the archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese in Singapore.
